Sophie was awarded a first class honours degree from University College London in 1997 and went on to study a PhD in Quantum Mechanics. On successful completion of her PhD in 2001 she started work at Thales Research and Technology (TRT) where she led projects on Adaptive Learning Systems and Information Management. She initiated the first programme to span the three TRT laboratories in France, Netherlands and UK in the area of Cognitive Systems research. She then went on to set up and lead a large collaborative team between TRT and University of Surrey to study remote collaboration technologies. She joined General Dynamics United Kingdom Limited in 2005, primarily to ensure exploitation of DIF DTC technologies into the UK Ministry of Defence Equipment Programme. She received her Chartered Physicist status in 2004.
